An avalanche struck the base camp of Himlung Himal in Nepal’s Manang district on Sunday morning, killing two people and leaving about a dozen missing. The avalanche buried a tent sheltering 9 climbers and 13 support staff, Nepal’s disaster authorities said.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, via Nepal Police, confirmed on X that two bodies were recovered from the camp and brought down by helicopter. Rescue teams were hampered by heavy snow and poor weather. Full search operations are expected to resume at first light on Monday.

All those killed or missing are Nepalese nationals, officials said. The missing count remains fluid, with sources reporting between 10 and 12 people unaccounted for. The staff were advance and route-fixing teams working for Himalayan Holidays Nepal and Imagine Nepal Treks. Expedition organiser Mingma Gyalje Sherpa said two of his kitchen staff were among the missing, and that teams had evacuated slopes after a weather warning the previous week.

The 7,126-metre Himlung Himal draws climbers each autumn season. Officials say Monday’s search effort will depend on weather conditions on the mountain.
