The United States and China have agreed to cut tariffs on $30 billion of goods and launch a dialogue on artificial intelligence, both countries said after President Xi Jinping's three-day visit to Washington, Reuters reported.

The reductions would apply to US exports such as agricultural goods, wood and cosmetics, and to US imports including small appliances, toys and decorations, a White House statement said. The two countries reached the eight-point consensus as the summit ended on Friday, September 25.

The sides also agreed to set up a trade council and extend the outcomes of earlier talks in Kuala Lumpur, China's Foreign Ministry said. On AI, they agreed to discuss the technology's risks and benefits, with the next round in November, and to open a channel for AI-related incidents.

The deal follows an extension of the US-China trade truce by two months, past its November 10 expiry, buying time for a potentially bigger agreement, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said. Xi has since returned to Beijing, Chinese state media reported.

Foreign Minister Wang Yi called the visit historic and said it would open a new chapter in US-China relations.
