UN condemns Russian strikes that killed 28 in Ukraine

The United Nations has condemned a wave of Russian missile and drone strikes on Ukraine that killed at least 28 people, including children.
UN Humanitarian Coordinator Matthias Schmale called for an end to attacks on civilians after overnight strikes devastated the city of Pryluky in the Chernihiv region.
A Russian missile obliterated a five-storey residential building in Pryluky. At least 19 people were killed there, including five children, and around 50 were injured. The toll may rise.
Across the country, at least 28 people died and about 100 were injured, officials said. Deaths were also reported in Kyiv, Kremenchuk and Oleksandriia.
President Volodymyr Zelensky called it one of Russia’s most “vile strikes”. He noted the attack coincided with Vladimir Putin’s birthday.
Russia fired about 70 missiles and dozens of Shahed drones overnight, Ukraine said. Moscow claimed it targeted military-industrial sites.
The UN says 15,280 civilians were killed or injured in Ukraine in the first eight months of 2026. A hospital in Kryvyi Rih was also hit earlier this week.
