Texas Voter Deadline Hits Amid 178,000-Record DPS Backlog

Monday, October 5 is the deadline to register to vote in the November 3 midterm elections in Texas, with early voting scheduled from October 19 to 30.
The deadline comes amid a major backlog at the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). The agency failed to forward more than 178,000 voter registration records to county officials, some dating back to October 2025, according to reports by Votebeat and the Texas Tribune.
A 2025 software update installed by vendor Deloitte halted the transfer of registration data, CNBC reported. The issue was discovered in September.
Democratic candidate for attorney general Nathan Johnson has promised to investigate the Deloitte contracts if elected, CNBC reported.
The Texas Secretary of State says all affected registrations will be processed in time for the election, and that the effective registration date will be when the person registered at DPS. Voters who registered through DPS but do not appear on the rolls can cast provisional ballots, according to Fox 7 Austin.
