Taiwan is pushing back against what it sees as Beijing’s efforts to rewrite the history of World War Two, after Xi Jinping and Donald Trump highlighted their countries’ wartime alliance at a Washington summit.

At a state dinner on Thursday, both leaders praised how their countries fought together. A White House fact sheet said Trump and Xi recalled that the US and China “were allies in World War Two and fought side by side.”

Taipei fears Washington could adopt Beijing’s version of events, weakening support from its most important arms supplier, Reuters reported.

Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory, says Beijing’s account is distorted: the Republic of China was the government fighting alongside the Allies, and it fled to Taiwan in 1949 after losing a civil war with the communists.

Shen Yu-chung, deputy head of Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council, said Xi is “continuously trying to guide the World War Two historical narrative to be led by the People’s Republic of China.”
