Swiss president hails India-EFTA trade pact as ‘win-win’

Swiss President Guy Parmelin has called the India-EFTA trade pact a “win-win” and praised India’s growing role in the world.
Parmelin made the remarks during his state visit to India. He held wide-ranging talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House in New Delhi on October 5. The two leaders reviewed trade, investment, science, technology and people-to-people ties.
India signed the Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement with the European Free Trade Association countries last year. It was India’s first free trade deal with a European economic bloc. The pact aims to bring $100 billion in investment and 10 lakh direct jobs to India over 15 years.
The two sides also signed a Migration and Mobility Partnership Agreement and a Young Professionals Agreement. These will open new doors for Indian students, researchers and professionals in Switzerland.
Parmelin received a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan. He also paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar called on the visiting leader and praised his push to deepen ties.
The visit marks the first anniversary of the India-EFTA pact coming into force.
