Durban protesters demand more deportations of migrants

Hundreds of people marched in Durban, South Africa, on September 30 against illegal immigration, demanding that the government step up deportations.
The crowds were led by the March by March group. They had set a September 30 deadline for people living illegally in the country to leave. The government did not recognise the deadline.
Protesters carried traditional Zulu weapons and sang cultural songs as they marched through the streets. Police reported no violence against foreigners during the march.
A similar deadline set for June 30 led to a mass repatriation of foreigners after attacks on immigrants. Several African governments arranged evacuations of their citizens.
Attacks on foreign nationals in recent months have created diplomatic tensions. Nigeria’s parliament suspended official visits and engagements with South Africa over the issue.
South African authorities say thousands of foreigners living illegally have been deported in recent months. Many blame migrants for high unemployment and pressure on public services.
