Russia rejects freezing Ukraine conflict, Peskov says

Russia has rejected the option of freezing the Ukraine conflict along the current front line, with the Kremlin saying its position remains unchanged.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the topic had come up repeatedly in contacts with the United States. He said Moscow was not interested in a ceasefire and wanted a strong and lasting peace instead.
Peskov said negotiations could continue even during fighting, and that fighting would only stop after peace agreements are signed. Partial or fragmentary agreements would not bring a lasting settlement closer, he added.
The comments responded to US proposals for a cessation of hostilities along the front line followed by peace talks. President Vladimir Putin said on October 1 that Russia was ready for talks if its national interests were taken into account.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on October 4 that the US had proposed trilateral technical-level talks with Russia and Ukraine by the end of October. He said Ukraine had agreed and the talks could be held in the UAE or another country chosen by Washington.
It is not clear whether Moscow has accepted the proposal. The war, now in its fourth year, continues with no sign of a breakthrough.
