Germany’s AfD, BSW plan joint motion to end Ukraine support

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) will launch a joint motion with the small far-left BSW party calling for an end to military support for Ukraine.
An AfD spokesperson said the motion will be debated in the Saxony-Anhalt state parliament next week. It will have no immediate impact on foreign policy, which is the federal government's domain in Berlin.
"This motion symbolises the desire for change," said Ulrich Siegmund, the AfD leader in Saxony-Anhalt. He led the party to its best-ever state election result last month, topping the poll but falling short of a majority.
The AfD has since explored cooperation with the BSW, which shares its opposition to German support for Ukraine. BSW founder Sahra Wagenknecht said Germany needed a government that resumes dialogue with Moscow.
The motion underscores a political shift in the eastern state. AfD lawmaker Tobias Rausch was recently elected president of the Saxony-Anhalt state parliament, the first AfD representative to head a German state parliament.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz has warned against extremism entering parliaments. The AfD wants Berlin to press for an end to the war and spend Ukraine aid money "for the people in our country", Siegmund said.
