Russian drones hit Kyiv bridges as Germany’s Merz visits

Russian drones struck bridges in Kyiv for the fourth straight day on Sunday, even as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz made an unannounced visit to the Ukrainian capital.
A drone hit the Northern Bridge over the Dnipro river in the morning. It was the second consecutive day the bridge was struck. Two people were injured, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said.
The Southern Bridge was hit five times on Thursday and Friday. The bridges carry about 500,000 vehicles a day and link the city’s east and west banks.
Merz arrived by train to meet President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He was greeted by air raid sirens and interceptor fire. “Ukraine needs all our support in the coming weeks,” Merz said.
Russia’s defence ministry said it targeted a route used to move troops and military equipment. It also claimed strikes on two cargo vessels heading to Odesa. Moscow has promised to intensify the attacks.
Kyiv now plans pontoon bridges and ferry services in case the crossings are knocked out.
