Moscow: Russia has extended its diesel export ban through October 31, 2026, tightening a global diesel market already under strain. The ban, first imposed in July after Ukrainian drone strikes hit Russian refineries, was due to expire before the extension was announced on September 30.

Retail diesel prices in Russia hit 88.44 rubles per litre on September 7, up 18.4 per cent since the start of the year, reflecting domestic supply pressure. The extension signals that refinery repairs are taking longer than expected.

Analysts said the move will keep upward pressure on global diesel prices, particularly in Europe and Asia, which have felt the pinch since the ban began. Diesel is a critical fuel for trucking, farming and industry.

The Kremlin has not indicated when exports might resume. Energy markets will watch October refinery runs for signs of recovery.

European buyers have scrambled for alternative supplies since the ban began, with prices rising across the continent. Analysts warned that any further extension beyond October would deepen the global diesel deficit heading into the winter heating season.
