The immigration agent who shot and killed Houston resident Lorenzo Salgado Araujo has been identified as Gregory Feathers, a retired Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent who was rehired in the past two years, according to a Texas Tribune report from September 8. The identification emerged after a Form I-213 record was mistakenly released by the US Attorney's Office, and Feathers' brother later identified him from a photo. His lawyer, Nicole DeBorde Hochglaube, declined to comment. Feathers has not been charged. The Harris County District Attorney, Sean Teare, is empanelling a grand jury to review the shooting. Araujo, 52, a construction business owner who had lived in the United States for about 35 years, was shot around 6:50 a.m. on July 7 in Houston's East End. The Department of Homeland Security has described the shooting as self-defence, a claim disputed by passengers who were in the car with Araujo. The Tribune reports that at least 25 people have been shot by ICE agents since January 2025, six of whom died, including three US citizens. Protesters rallied outside Houston City Hall on Tuesday demanding Feathers' arrest and prosecution.
