Billionaire Ken Griffin has pledged $3 billion to Carnegie Mellon University, the largest individual gift in the history of higher education. The Citadel founder and CEO announced on Wednesday that $2 billion will go toward a new Carnegie Mellon campus in Miami, with the remaining $1 billion invested in the university's Pittsburgh home. Of the Pittsburgh share, $500 million is flexible funding and $500 million goes to the School of Computer Science, which will be renamed the Kenneth C. Griffin School of Computer Science. Griffin will also join the university's board of trustees. The Miami campus will occupy more than 35 acres in the Wynwood district, with construction beginning in 2027, graduate students arriving in 2028 and the first undergraduates in 2032. It will host about 3,500 students, 300 faculty and 600 staff. The gift shatters the previous record of $2 billion given by Phil Knight and Penny Knight to Oregon Health and Science University in August 2025. University president Farnam Jahanian called the gift transformational for both cities.
