Russia hits Ukraine’s power grid in massive drone attack

Russia launched a massive overnight attack on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, firing around 190 drones and missiles at power plants and the electricity grid, Ukrainian officials said.
At least seven people, including a child, were killed in the strikes, which hit facilities including the Trypilska thermal power plant near Kyiv. Emergency power cuts were imposed in the capital and other regions as engineers raced to repair the damage.
Ukraine’s air force said it shot down about 160 incoming targets, including 86 jet-powered drones, though several missiles struck their targets. Officials described it as one of the heaviest assaults on the energy system this year.
President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Moscow of deliberately trying to plunge civilians into darkness as winter approaches. Russia has not commented on the specific strikes but has previously said it targets energy sites used by Ukraine’s military.
The attack has raised fresh fears about blackouts in the coming months. Ukraine’s allies are expected to discuss more air defence support for Kyiv at upcoming talks.
