Guinea-Bissau’s December elections delayed after coup

Guinea-Bissau’s presidential and parliamentary elections, scheduled for December 6, will have to be delayed, Prime Minister Ilidio Vieira Te told reporters on Thursday. He set no new date for the vote.
“There are no conditions for holding the elections scheduled for December 6,” the prime minister said. Political parties have not held congresses to choose their leaders, and potential candidates missed an October 6 deadline to file with the Supreme Court.
The delay follows the military coup of November 2025, when soldiers toppled President Umaro Sissoco Embalo before election results could be announced. The regional bloc ECOWAS suspended the country from its decision-making bodies after the takeover.
Voters in August approved a new constitution expanding presidential powers, though the main opposition boycotted the referendum. Last week the military government blocked Embalo from returning to the country, citing national security.
Guinea-Bissau has suffered repeated coups since independence from Portugal in 1974. The latest takeover drew condemnation from the African Union and the European Union, both demanding a swift return to constitutional order.
