The European Union will give 52 million euros to help Ukraine prepare for winter, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced Saturday at the UN General Assembly in New York.

The money is part of a nearly 710-million-euro humanitarian package announced for crises worldwide. About 380 million euros will go to Sub-Saharan Africa, while 103 million euros is earmarked for vulnerable populations in Palestine and Lebanon.

According to the Commission’s humanitarian aid department, Ukraine’s share will cover emergency aid and winter preparation, including shelter, essential services and energy support ahead of the cold season.

Von der Leyen said the package responds to conflicts, extreme weather and rising living costs that are upending lives worldwide. The pledge was made as part of this year’s Global Citizen campaign, according to her statement.

The EU is one of the world’s leading humanitarian donors, and the Commission says it has allocated over 2.5 billion euros for humanitarian aid since the start of the year. The new package is pending approval by the EU budgetary authority.

The winter aid arrives as Russian attacks on energy infrastructure make cold weather one of Ukraine’s most dangerous seasons.
