Congressional Democrats have demanded the White House take down taxpayer-funded ads promoting President Donald Trump, calling them illegal government propaganda ahead of the midterm elections.

The top Democrats on the House and Senate spending panels wrote to White House chief of staff Susie Wiles, saying the ads violate the federal ban on government propaganda. They compared the ads to “government propaganda one might expect in North Korea” and demanded a full account of taxpayer spending.

The spots aired on Fox News and Newsmax with a “Paid for by the U.S. Government” disclosure. They feature Trump vowing to defeat communism and socialism, a clip of UFC CEO Dana White calling Trump “the toughest, most resilient person I’ve ever met,” and text touting the “largest tax cuts in history.”

The White House defends the spots as public service announcements, saying Trump is not on the ballot and ads carry no call to action. Criticism has also come from Republicans: Senator Thom Tillis called the ad “inappropriate,” calling it something he would expect from Viktor Orban.

The dispute will test how far presidents can use public money for self-promotion.
