Belgium's top threat-analysis official has said Iran was behind a coordinated series of attacks on Jewish sites in the country earlier this year. Gert Vercauteren, head of Belgium's Coordination Unit for Threat Analysis, made the claim in an interview with public broadcaster RTBF.

Vercauteren said those behind a bomb attack on a synagogue in Liège and the torching of a car in Antwerp "certainly followed Iran's call to strike Jewish and Israeli interests everywhere in the world." He said the attacks were part of a coordinated effort, not isolated cases.

The explosive device went off outside the Liège synagogue shortly before 4 a.m. on March 9. That same week, a car was set on fire in Antwerp's Jewish quarter. No one was hurt in either attack, according to reports.

Vercauteren said a person later arrested in Turkey was leading the coordination of attacks in Europe. Iran is believed to have stepped up efforts against Jewish and Israeli targets since a joint U.S.-Israeli war against Tehran began in late February.
