Arizona Candidate Says She Was Raped While Fixing Signs

An Arizona Democratic congressional candidate has said she was raped in August while out repairing her campaign signs.
Bernadette Greene-Placentia, who is running in the state’s 8th Congressional District, told the Phoenix New Times that she was hit on the back of the head around 2 am on August 14 in a Sun City parking lot and woke to find a man assaulting her. She said one attacker called her a Democratic expletive.
She reported the assault to the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office on August 31. The sheriff’s office confirmed the report and said the investigation is ongoing. No arrests have been announced.
The Arizona Republic noted that her account could not be independently verified. Greene-Placentia said she delayed reporting because she was embarrassed.
The former long-haul trucker is challenging Republican incumbent Representative Abraham Hamadeh in the November 3 election. The district covers a staunchly Republican area northwest of Phoenix.
