Trump’s ‘Super Intelligence’ Order: What It Actually Does

President Donald Trump signed Executive Order 14434, “Inaugurating the Era of Super Intelligence,” on September 29, ordering US federal agencies to swap the term “Artificial Intelligence” for “Super Intelligence” — or “SI” — in official communications.
What does it do? The order tells executive-branch departments to use “Super Intelligence” in official correspondence, websites, policy documents and reports, where the law allows. It defines SI as the technologies already covered by the existing US legal definition of AI. Old regulations, contracts, grants and documents stay unchanged.
What doesn’t it do? It sets no rules for private companies. No business is required to rename anything. The order also gives the White House science adviser 60 days to propose legislation that would define the term in federal law.
Why it matters: six leading labs — Google, Anthropic, Meta, OpenAI, xAI and Nvidia — signed a voluntary White House safety accord alongside the order. Elon Musk has already adopted the language, confirming his SpaceXAI unit will rebrand as SpaceXSI. Expect “SI” to appear everywhere Washington communicates about AI.
