South Korea bank data leak: what we know so far

South Korea is investigating a wave of data leaks across its financial sector. Here is what we know so far.

President Lee Jae Myung ordered a thorough investigation on Sunday, October 4, covering the leaks and the official response, Seoul’s presidential office said. The order followed reports of personal data breaches at banks, finance companies and public agencies.

Financial Services Commission chairman Lee Eog-weon convened an emergency meeting on Sunday with banks, regulators and affected institutions. It followed a similar round of talks on Friday. Yonhap reported that Hana Bank and Woori Bank were also breached, after Shinhan Bank and KB Kookmin Bank reported cyberattacks.

Regulators launched on-site investigations after Shinhan Bank reported a breach on September 30. The FSC chairman said authorities could not rule out the use of artificial intelligence in the attacks, and called for an “AI attacks defended by AI” approach.

The regulator has ordered banks to run full security inspections, tighten access controls and cut unnecessary external system access. The banks could not be reached for comment on Sunday. Broader upgrades to the financial sector’s cybersecurity framework are expected.
