Explained: what making daylight saving time permanent would mean

The House passed the Sunshine Protection Act in July by 308 votes to 117. If it became law, the US would observe daylight saving time all year, ending the twice-yearly clock changes. But what would that actually mean? Clocks would stop falling back in November. Winter sunsets would come an hour later, giving more daylight in the evening. Winter sunrises would also come an hour later, meaning darker mornings for children going to school and workers commuting. Supporters say more evening daylight is good for families, businesses and safety. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise said there was no reason to lose an hour of sunlight. President Trump has backed the change on Truth Social. Opponents point to America’s failed experiment. In 1973, President Nixon signed year-round daylight saving into law during the energy crisis. But within weeks, eight children died in early-morning traffic accidents in Florida, and Congress repealed the law within a year. The Senate is the blocker. Majority Leader John Thune says there is “no clear path” to the 60 votes needed. Clocks fall back on November 1.
