Kenya Ebola Case: What We Know So Far

Kenya confirmed its first imported Ebola case on October 6. The patient, a Kenyan citizen who had lived in the Democratic Republic of Congo for seven years, fell ill about a month ago, travelled by road to Kampala, Uganda, and flew to Nairobi on October 3. He died on the night of October 5.
Tests confirmed the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus. It is a rare strain with no approved vaccines or treatments. The virus spreads through direct contact with blood or bodily fluids of an infected person, not through the air.
Health authorities have listed 28 contacts — including family members and health workers — who are being monitored or quarantined. They are also tracing 23 passengers and four crew members from the same Jambojet flight. Kenya has notified the World Health Organization.
The case is linked to the DRC’s ongoing outbreak, which has recorded thousands of infections. Kenya says it has screened over 652,000 travellers since surveillance was stepped up. No further cases have been confirmed so far.
