India’s finance minister says trade talks with the US have hit a wall. Here is what the impasse means.

Nirmala Sitharaman said negotiations have reached a plateau “beyond which giving or taking might be very, very difficult.” It is the first time India has publicly acknowledged the deadlock.

The core issue is the trade imbalance. The US goods deficit with India was $58.42 billion in 2025. Washington wants to shrink it; New Delhi wants preferential tariffs for its exports.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said last week a deal was not “imminent.” Trump announced an interim deal in February with India agreeing to “BUY AMERICAN.”

For Indian exporters, the delay means continued uncertainty over US tariffs. For consumers, a deal could eventually mean cheaper American goods.

Both sides say talks continue. But with positions hardened, a breakthrough looks distant.
