India’s road to 2027 ODI World Cup explained

The 2027 ODI World Cup begins on October 2 in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Here is how the tournament works and what India's path looks like.
Twelve teams will be divided into two groups of six. The top three from each group, plus the best fourth-placed side, advance to a "Super 7" phase before the semi-finals and final on November 21.
India are in Group A with Australia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe and a qualifier. They open against defending champions Australia in Cape Town on October 7, 2027, and face Pakistan at the Wanderers on October 10.
Preparation has already begun. India are set to play a six-match ODI series in South Africa at World Cup venues, plus other bilateral series and the 2027 Asia Cup, to adapt to local conditions.
History favours caution: India have won only 13 of 39 ODIs on South African soil. The team last played an ODI series there in 2023, winning 2-1 under KL Rahul.
