Delhi’s Pollution Fight, Explained: AI Room to WFH

Delhi has launched a major push against winter pollution. Here is what the plan includes. First, the government has opened a 24×7 AI-based command and control centre. It tracks 789 construction sites in real time, with live CCTV at 716 locations to curb dust. It also monitors mechanical road sweepers and citywide air quality stations. Special teams called ‘Vayu Rakshaks’, with GPS vehicles and body cameras, will act on local pollution sources across 39 divisions. Second, the winter action plan brings tough curbs. Construction activity will be banned from November 1 to January 31, with a full ban from December 10 to January 20. From November 1, half of government and private sector staff will work from home. Non-Delhi vehicles below BS-VI standards cannot enter, except CNG and electric ones. Third, new PUC rules have already taken effect. From October 1, a valid Pollution Under Control certificate is needed to buy fuel. The trigger: Delhi recorded an AQI of 166 on October 1, its most polluted October start in four years.
