MEA Warns Indians Against Joining Russian Army

The Ministry of External Affairs on Wednesday issued a fresh advisory for Indians travelling to Russia. It urged citizens to be cautious about job offers abroad and strongly discouraged joining the Russian armed forces. The ministry said it continues to receive reports of Indian nationals being recruited into the Russian military. It noted that some people are willingly seeking such offers, expecting money and believing they can later get released through the Indian government. ‘It is reiterated that this is a dangerous path and is strongly discouraged by the Government,’ the ministry said. The advisory also flagged cases where individuals sought to give up Indian citizenship, take a Russian passport and then join the Russian forces. It said recruitment is also being done by non-public entities, including voluntary groups. Citizens were advised to deal only with agents registered with the MEA and to consider the grave risks to their lives.
