Norway plans temporary ban on AI smart glasses

Norway's government will propose a temporary ban on camera-equipped AI glasses in selected public and privacy-sensitive places. Digitalisation Minister Torgeir Micaelsen said on Monday the bill would go to parliament as soon as possible. The restrictions would cover places where people expect privacy or where children gather: schools, kindergartens, playgrounds, doctors' offices, gym changing rooms, beaches, parks, museums, shopping centres and public events. "I am worried that new, powerful technology is being introduced where people risk being photographed, filmed or audio-recorded without knowing it," Micaelsen said. It is not a total ban. Private use and socially beneficial applications such as accessibility tools would stay allowed, and an expert group will advise on permanent regulation. The move follows reports of covert filming and harassment. Retailers are already reacting: Hans Anders stopped selling Ray-Ban Meta glasses in the Netherlands and Belgium, while some schools and event operators have imposed their own limits.
