Norway proposes temporary ban on AI glasses in public spaces

Norway’s government plans to propose a temporary ban on AI glasses in selected public places. The move targets privacy concerns around hidden cameras and microphones.
The ban could cover parks, beaches, museums, shopping centres, schools and gyms with changing rooms. The government said private use would still be allowed.
Digitalisation Minister Torgeir Micaelsen said people risk being photographed, filmed or recorded without their knowledge. The government will set up an expert group to study permanent rules.
The proposal is not yet law. The minority government will present a bill to parliament as soon as possible. It must decide which devices the ban would cover.
The move mirrors a global backlash against smart glasses. New York clubs have banned them and Meta updated its glasses so the camera stops working if the indicator light is covered. Norway’s Labour-led minority government will need opposition support to pass the bill. An expert group will also advise on permanent rules for body-worn cameras and audio devices.
