Manus raises $500M after Meta deal collapse

Manus, the AI agent startup, has raised more than $500 million in a new funding round after unwinding its acquisition by Meta. Butterfly Effect, Manus’s parent, announced the round on Thursday. It was co-led by Boyu Capital and IDG Capital, with Tencent, Sequoia China and ZhenFund also investing. Meta announced a deal valued at more than $2 billion to buy Manus in December 2025. Chinese authorities ordered the transaction unwound in April amid concerns about foreign control of advanced AI technology. Manus resumed independent operations in August. The startup builds general-purpose AI agents that carry out tasks such as research, coding and automation with little human input. Its annualised revenue run rate had reached about $500 million by June, according to The Information. The company is now reportedly valued near $4 billion, double the Meta deal price. Manus is also said to be considering a Hong Kong listing, though not before 2027. The raise shows investors still bet big on independent AI agent companies despite giants like OpenAI and Google.
