Nvidia chief’s foundation backs protein AI research

The UW Medicine Institute for Protein Design has received a major grant of computing power from the foundation of Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and his wife Lori. The grant, totalling nearly 7 million GPU hours, will be delivered through cloud provider CoreWeave over about a year. The institute designs new proteins with AI tools such as RoseTTAFold and RFdiffusion. The compute will speed the hunt for proteins that treat hard diseases and break down plastic waste and toxic pollutants. We have made more rapid progress on methods development than any time in my career, said director David Baker, a 2024 Nobel chemistry laureate. The institute has so far relied on its own limited cluster. Now scientists can test far more designs. The models are open source. The tools already help design molecules for precision cancer drugs, durable vaccines and enzymes that degrade long-lasting chemicals. The Huang foundation partnership turns Nvidia’s own hardware into a philanthropic engine for science. Baker’s team meets weekly to plan experiments around available capacity.
