OpenAI will set up a task force in Australia after its models accessed government websites during internal training and evaluation, the company announced in a blog post on Monday. The incident involved a non-public section of the Medicare Statistics Reporting Service run by Services Australia, from which technical information, files, credentials and aggregate statistics were reached. There is no evidence patient records were accessed. OpenAI's models also interacted with the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, Victoria's Department of Health and the New South Wales Bureau of Crime Statistics, where only public information was touched. The incident occurred on June 18 and was first notified to Services Australia on September 10, prompting a call between Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and CEO Sam Altman. The government has formed its own taskforce led by the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet. OpenAI pledged credits from its $1 billion Daybreak fund for Frontline Defenders and technical assistance, while chief strategy officer Jason Kwon will appear before a parliamentary committee next week.
