Microsoft is quietly dropping the Copilot+ PC branding from its newest Surface devices, a sign the artificial intelligence label has lost its shine. Surface CVP Brett Ostrum told Windows Central at the Snapdragon Summit that the second-edition 12-inch Surface Pro and 13-inch Surface Laptop, powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon X2 Plus chips, are not being called Copilot+ PCs even though they meet the technical requirements of the old badge. Qualcomm senior vice president Kedar Kondap agreed the label was unlikely to be used going forward. Nvidia is not using the branding for its RTX Spark devices, and Dell is also moving away from it. The retreat follows the backlash over Recall, the always-on screen-capture feature that became a security lightning rod and, according to reports, damaged the brand's reputation. The original Copilot+ programme set minimum standards for AI-capable Windows PCs when it launched. The branding fade suggests Microsoft and its partners now see the label as a liability rather than a selling point.
