Google celebrated its 28th birthday on Sunday with a nostalgic doodle featuring its vintage 1998 logo, accompanied by a birthday trivia quiz for users.

The tech giant was incorporated on September 4, 1998, by Stanford PhD students Larry Page and Sergey Brin, who started the project, originally called BackRub, as a new way to rank web pages.

The company began with a $100,000 cheque from Sun Microsystems co-founder Andy Bechtolsheim, written before Google even existed as a company, and set up its first office in a Menlo Park garage.

Google has marked September 27 as its birthday since 2006, and its first birthday doodle appeared on the same date in 2002.

From a search engine run out of a garage, Google has grown into one of the world’s largest companies, with its products used by billions of people every day.

The doodle tradition began in 1998 when Page and Brin placed a stick figure behind the logo to signal they were at a festival. Since then, Google’s doodles have marked events, anniversaries and personalities across the world, becoming a cultural fixture of the internet.
