Fervo switches on world’s first enhanced geothermal plant

Fervo Energy has started selling electricity from its Cape Station power plant in Utah, the world’s first enhanced geothermal plant to reach commercial operation. The plant went live on September 30, one day ahead of schedule.
From groundbreaking to commercial operations, the first block at Cape Station took just 23 months to complete, TechCrunch reported. The company aims to build future blocks in as little as 18 months as it refines its process.
The first GeoBlock reached 33 megawatts of net power production. It is the first third of what will become a 100-megawatt plant, with potential to eventually generate as much as 4 gigawatts, the company said.
Google and Southern California Edison are among the buyers committed to taking power from the project. Enhanced geothermal drills deeper than traditional plants, tapping hotter rock to widen the technology’s reach.
“No team has ever built a project like this anywhere in the world, and we did it ahead of schedule,” co-founder and CEO Tim Latimer said. The milestone could attract power-hungry data centre operators searching for clean, round-the-clock energy.
