Australia probes Chinese smart glasses over privacy fears

Australia’s privacy watchdog has launched an investigation into a China-based company behind smart glasses sold at Kmart, the Guardian and ABC reported.
The glasses come with an app that critics have dubbed “pervert glasses” over fears they can secretly record people. The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner is examining the company’s data practices.
MLex reported that the probe covers the smart glasses app and how it handles personal information. The company says its products follow local laws.
Privacy advocates warn the devices could be used for spying in public and private spaces. Smart glasses with hidden cameras have raised alarms worldwide.
The probe is part of wider Australian scrutiny of Chinese technology firms. A finding against the company could lead to fines.
The investigation is ongoing, and the regulator has not set a timeline for its decision.
The glasses were sold cheaply through Kmart stores across Australia. Consumer groups had flagged the recording fears months ago.
