Harmanpreet Kaur steps down as India women’s captain

Harmanpreet Kaur has stepped down as captain of the India women’s cricket team across all formats. The 37-year-old announced the decision on social media on Tuesday.
“Today, I step down as captain of the Indian women’s cricket team across all formats,” Kaur wrote. “This is not an easy decision. It carries years of memories, emotions, sacrifices, and moments that will stay with me.”
She led India to their first 50-over World Cup title on home soil last year. Kaur captained India in five Tests, 51 one-day internationals and 155 T20 internationals, Reuters reported.
Indian media said the decision came after a meeting with BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia to discuss the team’s future. Kaur said she will continue playing.
“Captaincy ends. The journey continues,” she wrote. Smriti Mandhana is seen as the front-runner to take over the role.
Kaur took charge of the T20 side in 2016 and became one of the most-capped captains in women’s cricket. Her decade-long leadership reshaped Indian women’s cricket.
She became the first cricketer, male or female, to captain a side in more than 150 T20 internationals. Her 77 wins are the most by any women’s T20I captain.
