Apple Teams With LG for Smart Home Devices

Apple is rebooting its smart home push with LG’s help. Bloomberg reported on October 6 that the two companies will build connected home devices together, marking a major expansion of Apple’s home strategy.
The lineup includes a video doorbell, a thermostat, a smart deadbolt lock, and indoor and outdoor security cameras. A floodlight camera is also planned. LG will manufacture and support the devices. Apple will direct the design and engineering, keeping control of the experience.
Apple’s own devices arrive first. A smart home hub, a new HomePod mini and a TV set-top box launch on October 13. The LG accessories follow months later, after regulatory approvals are complete.
The devices support Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Thread and Matter for broad compatibility. The deadbolt adds ultra-wideband for precise unlocking. The move revives HomeKit, which Apple launched in 2014. It pits Apple squarely against Amazon’s Ring and Google’s Nest in the competitive smart home market.
