Aleph Alpha launches Kolibri, a 78B sovereign open-weight AI model

German AI company Aleph Alpha has launched Kolibri, a 78.1-billion-parameter open-weight language model built for European sovereignty and regulatory compliance.Kolibri is a mixture-of-experts model with only 3.46 billion active parameters per token, trained on 24 trillion tokens across 768 Nvidia B200 GPUs in Germany and Finland. It supports contexts up to one million tokens and handles English and German. The model is released under Apache 2.0 with weights on Hugging Face, allowing governments and regulated industries to run it entirely on their own infrastructure. Aleph Alpha says it complies with the EU AI Act and the General-Purpose AI Code of Practice. The company positions Kolibri for public administration, industry and aerospace. A notable feature is its "Merlin-Arthur" protocol, which trains the model to abstain when supplied evidence does not support an answer, aimed at reducing hallucinations in retrieval-based setups. Kolibri launched on October 3, Germany's Unity Day. Aleph Alpha says it matches models with up to four times its active parameter count.
