Squash bronze, Nitesh’s historic wrestling silver for India

India added two medals at the Asian Games on October 1. The men’s squash team won bronze. Wrestler Nitesh Siwach won a historic silver.

The squash team lost 2-1 to Malaysia in the semi-final at Nagoya. Abhay Singh lost 3-0 to Eain Yow. Veer Chotrani levelled the tie with a 3-0 win over Sanjay Jeeva. Velavan Senthilkumar lost the decider to Ameeshenraj Chandaran in four games.

Nitesh won silver in the men’s 97kg Greco-Roman wrestling. He lost 0-4 to Japan’s Yuri Nakazato in the final. Nitesh is the first Indian Greco-Roman wrestler to reach an Asian Games final in 64 years. The last was Maruti Mane in 1962.

President Droupadi Murmu congratulated both on X. She called Nitesh’s performance historic.

India also won sailing silver on the day. Manu Francis and Prince Noble finished runners-up in the men’s skiff. Ganesh Thirumuru took bronze in men’s compound archery.

Sumit Nagal lost in the tennis quarter-finals. That ended India’s 40-year Asian Games medal streak in the sport.

The men’s volleyball team lost 0-3 to Pakistan in the quarter-finals.
