Pretorius smashes 188*, breaks Gayle’s T20 record

South Africa’s Lhuan-dre Pretorius has broken the record for the highest individual score in men’s T20 cricket. He smashed an unbeaten 188 off 79 balls for the Titans against the Knights.

The innings came in the CSA T20 Challenge in Bloemfontein. Pretorius hit 15 fours and 13 sixes. His 28 boundaries accounted for 138 of his 188 runs. His strike rate was 237.97.

Chris Gayle held the previous record. The West Indian scored 175 not out for Royal Challengers Bengaluru against Pune Warriors in the 2013 IPL. The record had stood for more than 13 years.

Pretorius, 20, reached his fifty off 24 balls. He reached his hundred 16 balls later. He fell 12 runs short of the first T20 double century.

The Titans finished on 267 for 3. It is the highest T20 total in South Africa. They fell four short of their own competition record of 271 for 3.

Pretorius has played 17 T20 internationals for South Africa. His highest international score is 101 against Namibia. He made his international debut in Test cricket. He scored 153 against Zimbabwe in June 2025.
