World champions Spain beat England 3-2 at Wembley on Saturday in the Nations League opener, extending their unbeaten run to 39 matches — a record for a European team.

Lamine Yamal struck in the second minute after an error by Marc Guehi. England fought back in a four-minute spell: Anthony Gordon equalised in the 36th minute, then captain Harry Kane headed home to make it 2-1. But Kane slipped taking a second-half penalty and hit the crossbar.

Substitutes Alex Baena and Mikel Oyarzabal turned the match around for Spain. Baena scored on the hour after a misplaced pass, and Oyarzabal dinked the winner over goalkeeper James Trafford in the 74th minute.

It was England’s first match since their World Cup semifinal defeat to Argentina. Manager Thomas Tuchel called it “the worst start possible” and said only Spain’s third goal was “really scored” — the others came from England’s errors. Spain’s unbeaten run now stretches back to March 2024, when Colombia last beat them.
