Shafali Verma Slams Maiden T20I Ton at Asian Games

Shafali Verma struck an unbeaten 100 off 49 balls to become the first woman to score a century at the Asian Games. The knock came in India’s semifinal win over Bangladesh at the Aichi-Nagoya Games.

India posted 195 for 3 at the Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin on September 20. Verma hit nine sixes and three fours in her innings. India then bowled Bangladesh out for 81 to win by 114 runs.

The 22-year-old made her T20I debut in 2019. In a BCCI video, she called scoring a century for India a childhood dream. She said she had been manifesting the milestone since her debut.

Her 49-ball hundred ranks among the fastest ever in women’s T20I cricket. It set up the final against Sri Lanka, which India won to defend their Asian Games gold.

Her century is the first by any woman in the history of the Asian Games cricket tournament. India went on to beat Sri Lanka in the final on September 22 to defend the women’s gold medal.
