Jorge Jesus leaves door open for Ronaldo return

Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus says Cristiano Ronaldo can return to the national team if he chooses, leaving the door open after the 41-year-old’s abrupt departure from the squad last week.
Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp after being an unused substitute in a win over Norway and learning he would not start against Denmark. He said on social media he would explain his reasons in due course.
Speaking after Portugal’s 2-1 Nations League win over Norway on Sunday, Jesus said: if he wants to, he will return to the national team. He added that Ronaldo himself should decide how he wants to end his time with the side.
Portugal won 4-2 in Denmark without Ronaldo and secured a place in the Nations League quarter-finals. Ronaldo remains Portugal’s record scorer and most-capped player, with 146 goals in 234 appearances.
Federation president Pedro Proenca said Ronaldo remains in the team’s plans, calling the episode a misunderstanding. Portugal next host Denmark on November 14 before visiting Wales.
