Padres sweep Cubs to reach NL Division Series
The San Diego Padres swept the Chicago Cubs out of the National League Wild Card Series with a 4-1 win in Game 2 on Wednesday.
Pinch-hitter Gavin Sheets blasted a two-run homer, and five Padres pitchers combined on a five-hitter at Petco Park. San Diego had won the opener 8-0.
The Cubs led the majors in runs this season but managed only eight hits and one run across 18 innings. Stars Pete Crow-Armstrong and Alex Bregman went a combined 0 for 15 with eight strikeouts.
Ethan Salas drove in a run and became the youngest player to catch a postseason game in major league history.
The Padres, who are 20-3 since September 5, now face the MLB-best Milwaukee Brewers, who won a franchise-record 103 games, in the Division Series this weekend.
It was sweet revenge for San Diego. The Cubs had eliminated the Padres in three games in last year’s Wild Card Series at Wrigley Field.
Why it matters: the Padres’ pitching has made them a genuine threat in October, with the World Series path now running through Milwaukee.
