Odisha announces Rs 11 lakh each for hockey gold teams

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has announced a cash reward of Rs 11 lakh for each player of India’s Asian Games gold-winning hockey teams. Support staff of both teams will receive Rs 5.5 lakh each. The announcement came on October 3, after India completed a historic double gold in hockey at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.
The women’s team beat defending champions China 1-0 in the final on October 2. Lalremsiami scored the winning goal in the 10th minute. Goalkeeper Savita Punia saved a penalty stroke as India protected the narrow lead.
It was India’s first women’s hockey gold at the Asian Games in 44 years. The men’s team then beat Malaysia 5-1 in their final on Saturday to win back-to-back Asian Games gold medals. Both victories also secured direct qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
The Chief Minister’s Office said on X that the achievement had brought immense pride to the nation. Majhi praised the players’ determination and commitment. Odisha has deep links with Indian hockey and sponsors both national teams.
The state government said it remains committed to supporting sporting excellence.
