Xavi hails ‘family’ spirit after Serbia win
Netherlands coach Xavi Hernandez says he is satisfied with his first four games in charge after a 2-1 Nations League win over Serbia took the Dutch to the top of Group A2.
The victory gives the Netherlands a strong chance of reaching the quarter-finals in March. Xavi praised his squad’s fighting spirit, saying they had “fought like a family” in a match where Serbia made them defend for long spells.
The former Barcelona and Spain midfielder took over recently and has already tried different formations. His first four games brought a home draw with Germany, the away win over Serbia, and a 2-2 comeback draw in Greece.
One concern is the defence. The Netherlands have now conceded in 12 straight matches. Xavi said becoming harder to score against will take time. The Dutch next face Greece in Amsterdam on November 13, followed by a trip to Berlin to play Germany three days later.
