Shooter Neeru Dhanda won India’s fifth gold medal at the Asian Games on Tuesday, clinching the women’s trap title with a dominant performance in rainy conditions at Aichi-Nagoya.

Neeru topped individual qualification and controlled the final throughout, dropping just one target in the second series and only one more the rest of the way. She finished well clear of China’s Sun Yunong to secure the first individual shooting gold for India at these Games.

The gold lifted India to 11th place in the medal standings, with the country’s tally rising to 47 medals: 5 gold, 21 silver and 21 bronze.

It was a landmark result for Indian shooting, which had collected several silvers and bronzes but had been waiting for an individual gold. Neeru’s composure under pressure, in punishing rain, drew praise from coaches and teammates.

The medal added to a strong Day 11 for India, which also saw Parveen Hooda and Ankush Panghal assure themselves of boxing silvers by reaching their finals.
