Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday began a seven-day visit to the United States, where he will attend the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting and push forward talks on the India-US Bilateral Trade Agreement.

Goyal’s visit runs from September 29 to October 5 and covers Milwaukee and Chicago. A key engagement will be his meeting with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, with both sides working to advance a balanced and mutually beneficial BTA and finalise an interim deal in line with the joint statement of February 7, 2026.

The G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting, on September 30 and October 1 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, brings together trade ministers from the world’s major economies. India is expected to advocate for a WTO-centred, rules-based global trading system with adequate policy space for developing nations.

The visit comes amid trade tensions, including US legislation authorising higher tariffs on major buyers of Russian oil. Goyal recently said the trade pact was done and dusted and would be implemented once India secures a competitive advantage over rivals such as ASEAN economies, China and Bangladesh.

In Chicago, Goyal will also meet American business leaders, attend roundtables with startups, and pay tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on Gandhi Jayanti.
