Mohun Bagan reach IFA Shield final after penalty shootout win

Mohun Bagan Super Giant beat Punjab FC 4-3 on penalties to reach the IFA Shield final after 120 goalless minutes in Kolkata on Sunday. Goalkeeper Vishal Kaith was the hero, saving two spot-kicks as the Mariners held their nerve in the shootout. Mohun Bagan had a goal from Subhasish Bose disallowed during open play, but neither side could break the deadlock across two hours.
The semifinal was a cagey affair, with both defences on top and clear chances few. Punjab FC will rue missed opportunities to settle the tie before penalties. Mohun Bagan will now face the winner of the other semifinal between East Bengal II and NorthEast United in the final.
The IFA Shield, one of India’s oldest football tournaments, continues to draw big crowds in Kolkata. Sunday’s win keeps Mohun Bagan on course for another piece of silverware in a season where expectations remain high. Kaith’s two saves sparked celebrations among the Mohun Bagan supporters in the stands.
